Directions:
Located on Route 223 in Iona, along the Bras d'Or Lakes Drive.
Description:
The Highland Village open air museum is set on top of a 43 acre hillside over looking the world famous Bras d'Or Lakes of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. This museum depictes Nova Scotia's rich Scottish Gaelic culture and history. The pathways through the village chronicle a hundred and eighty years of Cape Breton living from the late 1700's to the earily 1900's.
This is accomplished through historic buildings and costumed staff that are very knowledgable of the strength of character and lve of home and family the earily settlers had.
The walk around this museum starts by going up a slope to the top of the hill to the first building (there is an upper parking lot that visitors can use if the hill is too much for them). Along the walk visitors will see many buildings including a school house, general store, and a blacksmith shop just to name a few.
This is a great stop to make while in Cape Breton, the museum also focuses on preserving the Gaelic culture and language.
